The Townsville Fire is proud to announce the continuation of our longstanding partnership with James Cook University (JCU), who will remain a Foundation Partner of the four-time WNBL champions for the next two seasons.
JCU has been an integral part of the Fire family since joining as Principal Partner in the 2013/14 WNBL season, and this renewal further cements a decade-long commitment to women’s sport, education, and community in North Queensland.
Townsville Fire General Manager Sam Pascoe said the partnership between the Fire and JCU represents more than sponsorship—it’s a shared vision of opportunity, empowerment, and regional pride.
“JCU’s continued support has been crucial to our success both on and off the court,” Pascoe said.
“This partnership not only helps us chase championships, but also allows us to support our players’ personal and professional development through study opportunities and wellbeing initiatives.
We’re incredibly proud to continue building this legacy together.”
As part of the renewed agreement, JCU will also become the Official Legacy Partner of the Fire’s 25th Anniversary season—a milestone year celebrating ‘A Proud Past and a Blazing Future’ for women’s basketball in North Queensland.
The partnership includes scholarships and tuition support for Fire players and staff studying at JCU, along with internship, clinical placement, and research opportunities for JCU students to gain hands-on experience in a professional sporting environment.
JCU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Biggs said the University is proud to continue standing alongside the Fire in celebrating excellence, resilience, and community spirit.
“JCU’s partnership with the Townsville Fire has now spanned more than a decade, and as the Fire celebrates 25 years of inspiring North Queenslanders, we’re thrilled to continue supporting this incredible team,” Professor Biggs said.
“The Fire are wonderful ambassadors for our city and region, and we look forward to watching them represent the JCU logo with pride as they strive for another championship.”
The Fire’s 25th season will also highlight the impact of women’s sport and education working hand-in-hand to create pathways for future leaders—on the court, in the classroom, and in the community.
The Townsville Fire tip off their 2025/26 WNBL campaign this Sunday with a Grand Final rematch against the Bendigo Spirit at Red Energy Arena.
