The Townsville Fire will proudly host the Batkovic Winter Cup for the sixth year, with the annual showcase set to take centre stage as the official curtain raiser on the Fire’s Army Day this season at the Fire Pit.
Now firmly established as a key fixture on the club’s calendar, the Batkovic Winter Cup honours two legends of the Townsville Fire and celebrates the strong and enduring relationship between the club, the Australian Defence Force, and the wider North Queensland community.
The Cup will once again bring together elite athletes from Defence and emergency service backgrounds in a competitive and meaningful contest, ahead of the Fire’s WNBL home game on Army Day – one of the club’s most significant themed rounds of the season.
Townsville Fire CEO Sam Pascoe said the Batkovic Winter Cup continues to be a powerful symbol of the club’s values.
“The Batkovic Winter Cup is about legacy, service and community,” Pascoe said.
“To reach six years is incredibly special. This game honours two people who have had a lasting impact on our club, while also recognising the men and women who serve our country and community. Army Day is always one of our most important home games, and the Batkovic Winter Cup sets the tone perfectly.”
Since its inception, the Batkovic Winter Cup has grown into a much-loved tradition, drawing strong support from Defence partners, players’ families, Fire members and fans. The match reflects the shared values of teamwork, resilience, leadership and commitment that sit at the heart of both the Townsville Fire and the defence community.
Army Day at the Fire Pit will once again one of the communities favourite game day of the season with the Batkovic Winter Cup providing fans with an exciting start to a day that celebrates service and sacrifice.
